Name is Captain Cook and no, it isn’t my real name. My family and I love to boat on Grand Lake in NE Oklahoma. We boat around the lake, tie up with others, swim, tube, fish, and just hang out with the crowd. Have fun.
I’ve been on Grand since 2002. We bought our first boat in 2009, sold it, and bought our current model in 2016. Just like all other boaters, we’re here for fun and laughs. We take the kids out, pull them around the tube, and then head to a cove and swim.
Then—as the day grows—kids grow hungry and we have to make a choice. Do we stop the fun, pull up the ropes, and travel twenty minutes or so to a dockside restaurant? And then take an hour to eat. (No fun, if you ask me)
Why can’t you prepare easy meals on the boat? Why pause the fun?
What the wife and I learned was; pulling up anchor or reeling in the tube line, then drying the kids off, and then drive the boat somewhere for lunch took a huge bite out of the day. We wanted to stay on the water and maximize the fun. Who wouldn’t?
We wanted to prepare meals on the boat, BUT HOW?
I searched Youtube about preparing/fixing meals on a boat. You’ll find some pertaining to blue water meals (cross ocean voyages), but not many about cooking lunch on a boat, in a lake. The wife and I sat down and had a brainstorming session on what would be easy to prepare on the boat. Something the kids would eat and perfect for lake weather.
When the kids are jumping off the back of the boat, the breeze is just right, the sun feels good, and the music is soothing my soul, I can whip something up real quick. Cooking is fun. At least it is for me. I’ll cook while the wife keeps an eye on the kids. We won’t have to run back to the marina, pack anything up, or dry off. AND THAT’S THE GOAL.
Preparing meals on the boat maximizes the fun.
So, over the next few weeks, I will be trying to make lunch and other meals on my boat to see how easy or difficult it really is. I don’t mind spending an extra few minutes cooking. My job as dad is being the captain of the boat, the safety of the vessel, and my passengers. …and, please—by all means—share your own family lake meals.
